A Day in Nérac
Nerac : Sophie’s Hometown
A deeply personal immersion in a charming royal town of Gascony.
10:00 AM – 11:30 AM: The Vibrant Saturday Morning Market
The day begins at the heart of Gascon gastronomy. Nérac’s weekly market is a true regional institution where the aromas of duck, Agen prunes, traditional tourtières (flaky apple pastries), and Pyrenean cheeses fill the air.
The “Insider” Experience: Sophie guides you through the colorful stalls to meet the local producers she has known since childhood. You will learn the history behind these products and enjoy spontaneous tastings right at the stalls of the Albret region.
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM: Immersion into Artisan Craftsmanship
After treating your taste buds, it’s time to discover local craftsmanship. The medieval streets and old tanneries of Nérac shelter the workshops of passionate creators.
The “Insider” Experience: Push open the doors of local art galleries, pottery studios, or leather workshops. This is a wonderful opportunity to chat directly with the town’s artisans and understand the creative energy of this historic city.
12:30 PM – 02:30 PM: Gascon Lunch by the Waterfront
Take a seat on a terrace at one of the quaint, typical restaurants nestled near the Old Bridge (Vieux Pont) or along the banks of the Baïse River.
On the Menu: Share a convivial moment around Southwest French cuisine (duck breast magret, confit, Gascon salad…) paired with a glass of Buzet, the local wine.
02:30 PM – 04:00 PM: A Royal Journey at the Château de Nérac
Dive into the town’s glorious past with a visit to the castle of Henry IV and Jeanne d’Albret. This Renaissance palace stands as a testament to the era when Nérac was a true European royal court.
The “Insider” Experience: As you explore the galleries and art collections, the visit is brought to life by Sophie’s historical anecdotes, reviving the intrigues and grand festivities of the Court of Navarre.
04:00 PM – 05:30 PM: Poetic Stroll through the Parc de la Garenne
To wrap up the day, cross the river to reach this historic royal park stretching along the Baïse. This is exactly where Queen Margot and Henry IV used to promenade.
The “Insider” Experience: A bucolic walk under the shade of century-old trees, punctuated by the discovery of magical fountains (like the Fontaine Fleurette) and ancient ruins. Sophie will share her own childhood memories of playing along these legendary pathways.
Bordeaux Wine Regions
History, Passion, and Storytelling
This day is designed to ditch the dry, technical lectures about soil chemistry and fermentation tanks. Whether you choose the rolling limestone hills of Saint-Émilion, the majestic estates of the Médoc, or the golden terroirs of Sauternes & Graves, we invite you to step into a living history book. Our focus is entirely on human stories, the passion of the winemakers, and the cultural magic of the region.
09:30 AM – 11:00 AM: Setting the Scene & Scenic Drive
The journey begins with a beautiful drive from Bordeaux. As the urban landscape fades into a sea of vines, your Franco-American hosts set the stage for the day ahead.
The Storytelling: During the drive, you’ll learn about the fascinating Anglo-Gascon history that shaped Bordeaux, how these lands became some of the most famous wine names in the world, and the unique identity of the specific region you are visiting today.
11:00 AM – 12:30 PM: Heritage & Architectural Treasures
Every Bordeaux wine region is home to spectacular history. We will take the morning to explore the unique architectural and cultural landmarks that make your chosen destination so special.
The Connection: Rather than just walking past monuments, we explore the local heritage with an insider’s eye. Whether we are wandering through ancient cobblestone alleys, standing before the grand façades of 19th-century châteaux, or uncovering hidden historical secrets, your hosts bring the local legends to life. We will also stop along the way to taste a traditional sweet treat unique to the local area.
12:30 PM – 02:30 PM: A Convivial Winemaker’s Lunch
We escape the tourist crowds and head to a boutique, family-run estate (château) for a relaxed, authentic meal.
The Experience: No stuffy dining rooms here. We share a long, convivial lunch right on the estate property—perhaps on a sunny terrace overlooking the vines or inside a historic barrel cellar. Over local charcuterie, artisanal cheeses, and seasonal dishes, the winemakers themselves often join the table, sharing stories of what it’s really like to harvest these lands across generations.
02:30 PM – 04:00 PM: The Art of the Blend (Without the Jargon)
After lunch, we take a stroll through the vineyards and into the cellars to understand the soul of the local wine.
The Storytelling: Instead of overwhelming you with technical data, your hosts explain the “why” behind the wine. Why certain grape varieties dominate this specific soil, how a family decides the personality of a vintage, and how a bottle of wine is essentially a time capsule of a single year’s weather and human effort. You’ll enjoy an intimate tasting of different vintages to feel how the wine beautifully evolves over time.
04:00 PM – 05:30 PM: Panoramic Views & A Farewell Toast
We wrap up the afternoon as the sunlight softens, casting a warm glow over the landscape.
The Grand Finale:
We gather at a spectacular viewpoint—whether it’s a medieval tower, a riverside terrace, or a hilltop overlooking a sea of vines—for one last panoramic view of the valley. With a final look over the beautiful countryside, your hosts share a few last anecdotes before heading back to Bordeaux, treating you not as clients, but as friends who now share the secrets of the region.
